Palm trees and the environment?

Right, so after my mom bought a bottle of palm oil i decided to look up palm oil on the net, and found some interesting things. What's the deal with palm trees and the enviroment? Are there too many palm trees being cut down for the oil? Are rainforests deforested to plant these treets? Can someone please clear things up for me? Thank you

Palm trees are cut down for a lot of reasons but not for palm oil because the oil comes from the fruit. I don't think that rainforests are deforested to plant palm trees. However, it's likely that palm trees are planted on deforested rainforests.
